Coating a patio or pool deck: slip, heat and freeze-thaw

A patio is not a garage floor that happens to be outside. Different exposure, different traffic, different failure modes, and a different product and texture to match.

Four things that change outdoors

  1. Water and bare feet. A smooth gloss finish that is perfect in a garage is genuinely dangerous around a pool. Exterior work gets a textured, anti-slip finish, not a shine.
  2. UV, all day. Anything that is not UV stable ambers and chalks. The top coat selection matters more outside than anywhere else.
  3. Freeze-thaw. Water gets into any gap, freezes, and lifts. Edges, cracks and joints have to be detailed properly or winter finds them.
  4. Surface heat. A dark coating in full sun gets hot enough to be unpleasant barefoot. Lighter colors matter more outside than inside.

The two main finishes for outdoor concrete

Textured coating with anti-slip aggregate. A sealed system similar to a garage floor but with aggregate worked into the top coat for grip and with an exterior-rated, UV-stable finish. Good for patios, pool surrounds, porches and steps. Lower profile and easier to clean.

Cementitious overlay. A thin concrete-based resurfacer troweled or sprayed over the existing slab, which can be textured and colored. It rebuilds a worn surface, hides more, and has a natural stone-like feel underfoot that stays cooler than a dark resin. Good for badly weathered patios and pool decks.

Which one is right depends on how far gone the concrete is and how the space gets used. We will tell you which we would put on our own house.

Pool decks specifically

Timing in Illinois

Exterior coatings are seasonal here. They need stable temperatures and a dry window, which realistically means roughly April through October. We do not coat patios in the winter and we will say so rather than take a deposit for a job that should wait. If rain moves into the forecast on the day, we move the date, and our guide on rain and concrete coatings explains why patching a rained-on section almost never matches.

What outdoor concrete has to look like first

Spalling, scaling and popouts are extremely common on patios because they take the full freeze-thaw cycle. All of that gets ground and repaired first, the same as a garage. Cracks on a patio are more likely to be movement cracks than shrinkage cracks, because exterior slabs are more exposed to ground movement, so they get honest treatment and an honest explanation of whether they may come back.

Common follow-ups

Will a coated patio be slippery when wet?

Not with anti-slip aggregate in the top coat, which is standard on everything we do outdoors. A smooth exterior coating with no aggregate is slippery when wet and we will not install one around a pool.

How hot does a coated patio get in the sun?

Similar to the concrete it is on, with darker colors noticeably hotter. If the space is used barefoot, go lighter. A cementitious overlay generally runs cooler than a dark resin finish.

How long does an exterior coating last compared to a garage floor?

Less, and anyone telling you otherwise is guessing. Full sun, freeze-thaw and standing water are harder on a coating than a garage floor is. Done properly it holds up for many years and it will still show its age before your garage does.
