Barn, shop and pole building floors

Shops and pole buildings are some of the most satisfying floors to coat, because the before is usually raw dusty concrete and the after is a space people actually want to work in.

What is different about an outbuilding slab

Dust control is the real reason people do this

A bare concrete shop floor gives off fine dust constantly. It gets on tools, into finishes, into air compressors and onto anything you are painting or building. Sealing the slab stops that completely, and for a woodworking or paint shop that alone pays for the floor.

What to specify in a working shop

Horse barns and ag buildings

Wash stalls, tack rooms, aisles and feed rooms all benefit from a sealed, mopable floor, and urine and ammonia are hard on bare concrete over time. Aisles and wash areas need serious slip resistance because they get wet and get hooves. These are usually a different, heavier system than a home garage and they are worth specifying properly.

Scheduling and cost on big square footage

Large floors are priced at a lower per-square-foot rate than a single-car garage because the setup is spread across more area, and our published rate is a starting point rather than a flat multiplier on a 3,000 square foot building. Bigger floors may run across more than one day, and on a working shop we will stage the work so you are not fully shut down if that is possible.

Details on the systems we use are on the commercial and shop floors page.

Common follow-ups

Can you coat a pole barn slab with no vapor barrier under it?

Usually yes, with a moisture-mitigating primer that is built for exactly that situation. What we will not do is put a standard system on an untested barn slab and hope. The test takes a day and it decides the whole build.

Will a coated shop floor hold up to a car lift and jack stands?

With a heavier build, yes. Point loads from stands and lift posts are concentrated, so we specify thickness for that use rather than residential thickness. Tell us at the quote what is going in the space.

Is it cheaper per square foot on a big building?

Yes. Mobilization, masking and setup are a fixed cost spread across the whole floor, so a 2,400 square foot shop prices meaningfully better per foot than a one-car garage. We will give you a real number for your building.
